Without having and family or friends who fished to show me the ropes I learnt for myself the hard way picking up what I could from books and magazines and testing it out on the local rivers and small still waters. Often cycling down to the river with my rod strapped to my handlebars and a rucksack with what limited tackle I had, the way so many of us are introduced to fishing. Fly fishing was something I read about but was so far removed from what I was doing that it seemed completely inaccessible. Fast forward to my 20’s when a friend at work revealed he had fly fished when he was younger and was going to do a beginner's course with Anglian Water to get started again. Needless to say, I jumped at the chance and spent the next few years trout fishing, first on still waters and then rekindling my love of river fishing, which remains my passion. Living quite a distance from my nearest trout stream I began to seek out other species on the fly which led me inevitably to pike. As a small lad he would take me every week in and around the Cambridgeshire and Fenland area. Back in the day I always enjoyed the 1st Sept arriving as it signalled the beginning of the Pike season. I have concentrated on fishing for Pike and other predators for the last 5 years, initially using the lure, but more recently preferring the Fly method. I feel that flies provide a different presentation from lures and find that fly fishing a more tangible method.When I started fishing for Pike with the fly I joined the PFFA and after fishing several events and found the members more welcoming and constructive than other clubs I have joined. As a dyed in the wool bait angler throughout the years, pike fly fishing only came to me 3 years ago and boy, am I glad it did as my fishing had gotten a bit stale but, after the first pike “hit” on fly I was entirely re-energised and my fishing was instantly fun again. Soon after this epiphany I joined the Pike Fly Fishing Association and took part in a couple of the organised pike fly events with like-minded anglers, many of whom have become friends, and being given the chance to act on behalf of the Pike Fly Fishing Association in a committee role is a very real honour for me. I have fished for pike (at times frantically) since around 1984. Like many, my introduction to the species was bait fishing, I progressed to lure angling and in the early 1990’s and added pike fly fishing to as a new obsession in 2008. Whilst I appreciate every fish caught, I choose to target larger fish whenever possible and have a decent tally of big fish to my name. I also enjoy tying pike fly’s and use my own ties exclusively although this is purely for my own satisfaction. A few words of advice for any interested, you don’t need to be a great caster, I’m certainly not. It will probably hurt at some stage whatever you do. Fly tying won’t save you any money, you will just end up carrying more and destroying the hoover! From small wild brown trout and grayling to the magnificent sewin and salmon that run our majestic waters. As a professional game angling instructor and guide I enjoy sharing these beautiful surroundings with individuals or groups who wish to learn or improve their fishing or casting skills in a safe and controlled environment. I am a member of GAIA the (game angling instructors association) as part of which I am constantly learning, developing and improving my fishing skills through their cppd programs. I am currently the GAIA Regional officer for Wales. I am qualified to teach single and double handed casting and fishing techniques. I am also an Angling trust Level 2 Coach which has enabled me to be part of a program which has taken Fly fishing into local schools with the help of the Wye Salmon Association (WSA) to educate the younger generation who are the future of fishing. I have also experienced the delights of fishing other parts of the UK and further afield such as Scotland for Salmon and sea trout, Slovenia for their beautiful brown and marble trout, and Sweden for their monster grayling. I am always looking to find different destinations to fish anywhere in the world. I help local clubs with tuition for their members and organise a number of casting and fishing skills days and fly tying nights for them and anyone to enjoy throughout the year. I am very proud to be able to provide guiding services for a number of local sporting venues, the most prestigious of which being the Glanusk Estate near Crickhowell and at one of South Wales’ most famous Fly fishing venues the Gliffaes Hotel. My most recent progression in fly fishing has been my fascination for pike. The hunt for these magnificent creatures has given me a new focus in fishing. Later I got drawn into the shiny lights of the carp scene which evolved into disillusionment with the whole sport of fishing, it had lost its magic that i remembered from my youth. Then along with a friend I discovered fly fishing for trout (something id only dabbled with in the past), something clicked this was more like it, i was actually hunting fish again, trying to outwit a wiley foe. Fishing was enjoyable again but stocked trout didn't quite tick all the boxes, something was missing. One day while fishing on Grafham water i saw another boat casting out these huge flies, a quick word at the end of the day and I find that they had been going for pike! And catching them! On a fly rod! This was it, this was something i had to have a go at, so with some research and some shopping I had the basics to give it a go, halfway through the day it happened , some prehistoric behemoth was following my fly, my heart was in my mouth, adrenaline was coming out my ears..... as she turned away. That was it i knew this fly fishing for pike was for me, but I needed help, I didn't really have a clue what i was doing and I was desperate to convert that follow into a take.
